Thought Field Therapy (TFT): Overview and Theory

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a psychosensory psychological technique developed by Dr. Roger Callahan in the 1980s. It is the original “tapping” offering precise tapping algorithms.

It is rooted in the principles of applied kinesiology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and traditional Chinese Acupressure. TFT helps to release emotional and psychological issues by having the client hold in his mind ( Thought Field)  a distressed emotion ( perturbation) about a specific topic while tapping targeted acupressure points on the body.

TFT’s foundation is based on the theory that ‘All negative emotions are caused by disturbances in the body’s energy field,” By tapping on specific meridian points in a prescribed sequence (algorithms) while thinking about the problem, TFT releases the distress and rebalances the body’s, energy flow and peace of mind.

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) vs. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Thought Field Therapy (TFT): Developed by Dr. Roger Callahan in the 1980s, TFT was one of the first tapping techniques. Callahan introduced the concept of “thought fields,” claiming that specific sequences of tapping on acupressure points correspond to particular emotional issues. It is efficient, easy to learn and powerful.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): Created by Gary Craig, a student of Dr. Callahan, in the 1990s, EFT technique taps all 14 meridians instead of TFT’s precise algorithm of tapping points.  EFT uses many affirmations while one is tapping on an issue.  TFT only requires that one hold the “thought Field” and use the algorithm that matches the distressed emotion.

Benefits and Applications of TFT

TFT can help relieve physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels:

  1. Physical Relief:
  • Reduces stress and tension, which can alleviate conditions like headaches, chronic pain, or fatigue.
  • Can decrease symptoms associated with somatic conditions linked to emotional distress.
  1. Mental Relief:
  • Alleviates intrusive thoughts, obsessive-compulsive patterns, and mental blocks.
  • Improves focus and clarity by reducing cognitive dissonance or mental “noise.”
  1. Emotional Relief:
  • Reduces symptoms of anxiety, depression, anger, phobias, and trauma.
  • Helps resolve grief, guilt, or shame associated with past events.
  • Effective in calming emotional triggers and creating a sense of peace.
  1. Spiritual Relief:
  • Facilitates a sense of inner balance and harmony.
  • Encourages self-awareness and emotional resilience, fostering spiritual growth.
  • Some clients report feeling more aligned with their purpose or experiencing a deeper connection to their inner self.
